SHAPING THE BEDFORDSHIRE LANDSCAPE

Impact of William Ireland and Archibald Thomson at Southill Park and Luton Hoo

William Ireland 1744-1824 was one of Capability Brown’s foreman who shaped the Luton Hoo landscape and after Brown’s death was employed to finish redesigning Southill Park.

Archibald Thomson 1752-1832 was the botanical advisor to Lord Bute at Luton Hoo.  He subsequently ran an important nursery with Gordon and Thomson at Mile End, London.
