Maulden Heath

Maulden Heath, an area within Maulden Wood which belongs to Forestry England, consists of grassland, dry lichen heath and conifer plantation where heathland is now being created, thanks to The Greensand Trust.

Maulden Heath is an area of around 30ha within Maulden Wood consisting of fields of undulating grassland, dry lichen heath and former conifer plantation on which heathland is being created.  It is managed by grazing.  Most of the area lies on sandy soils and so supports species that thrive on warm, well-drained soils such as harebell, gorse, sheep’s sorrel, solitary bees and reptiles.  In contrast, one field lies on clay and has a colourful show of meadow flowers such as black knapweed, ox-eye daisy and lady’s bedstraw in the summer.
