Heathland Lichens with Brian Eversham and Lewis Saunders
Sunday 25th February 2024 10:00 - 16:00
Cup-lichens, ‘reindeer-moss’, dog-lichen and devil’s-matchsticks – some of the largest and most beautiful lichens grow on heathlands, and indeed are an important part of the vegetation. This day will concentrate on lichens which grow on soil, especially the genus Cladonia, which has a reputation for being difficult to identify. But in our three counties, there are not too many species, and by the end of the day, you should be able to name most of them.
This is a useful skill both for natural heaths, and for gravel pits, disused railways and other brownfield sites.
