Explore Sandy Smith Nature Reserve

Did you know that there is peat in the Flit Valley?

Join us for a mid-morning walk with our ecologist Sue Raven around our Sandy Smith Nature Reserve. We’ll explore what peat is, why it is so important, and how it has shaped the landscape of the Flit Valley.

The walk will be approximately 2 miles around the nature reserve. If there is time we can continue the walk around the rest of the reserve. We will be going off the footpath down towards the river to see the areas where peat can be found. It will be wet underfoot- please wear wellies!

Sandy Smith is a nature reserve owned and managed by the Greensand Trust. As well as wet marsh and woodland, it is also home to scrub and grassland habitats. It was also part of the wider landscape of Chicksands Priory, with remains of a folly.

This walk is part of the Lowland Agricultural Peat Water Discovery Pilot funded by the Environment Agency and Defra and delivered by the Environment Agency as part of a wider initiative to progress the government’s targets on nature and climate as part of its Environmental Improvement Plan.
