Restoration Work is Underway at Silsoe Cage

Jun 2022

Work is currently underway to restore a key sandstone structure in Silsoe. The ‘Cage’ was a village lock up used to temporarily house drunks whilst they were sobering up or hold more serious criminals until they were put before the local magistrate.

The restoration of the Cage using traditional building skills to repair the stone and lime mortar and the door is part of our wider programme that has helped to restore key sandstone structures across Greensand Country.

We are also using materials from Bedfordshire Archives to create an interpretation board that tells the story of the Cage. Look out for both the restored structure and the interpretation board very soon!
