Greensand Country Landscape Partnership: Programme of Talks and Events Celebrating Greensand Country

GCLP are pleased to welcome Stephen Coleman, Historic Environment Information Officer for Central Bedfordshire Council, as he hosts the second installment of his two part Zoom lecture.

Beginning in Sandy, where Iron Age hillforts were succeeded by the Roman town at Chesterfield, we will first look at what excavations have told us us about daily life there in Roman times.  Next, rural farmsteads scattered across the Greensand Ridge will be viewed besides higher status sites like the temple or villa site at Ruxox followed by a glimpse of the Haynes Hoard.  Little is known of Saxon settlement but there is evidence from cemeteries like that excavated at Chamberlain’s Barn, Leighton Buzzard.
